Before Your Next Ride: 7 Motorcycle Checks That Take Just a Few Minutes

A few minutes in the driveway can tell you a lot about a motorcycle. You do not need to tear anything apart. The goal is simply to notice changes before they become bigger problems on the road.

1. Tires and wheels

Look for obvious damage, low pressure, unusual wear, loose hardware, or anything that looks different from your last ride. Tire pressure should be checked against the motorcycle manufacturer's recommendation.

2. Fluids and leaks

A new drip under the bike, a sudden change in fluid level, or a strong fuel or coolant smell deserves attention. Small leaks are often easier to deal with before they become large ones.

3. Brakes

Pay attention to lever or pedal feel and listen for new grinding, scraping, or squealing. A noticeable change in braking feel is a reason to have the system inspected.

4. Lights and electrical

Check the headlight, brake light, turn signals, and horn. Slow cranking, dim lights, or repeated battery trouble can point toward a battery, charging, connection, or wiring issue.

5. Chain, belt, and final drive

Look for obvious damage, unusual slack, missing hardware, or changes in noise. Follow the manufacturer's service information for adjustment and inspection intervals.

6. Controls

Throttle, clutch, brake controls, steering, and switches should feel normal and move freely. A new bind, looseness, or change in feel is worth investigating.

7. Listen to the motorcycle

You know what your bike normally sounds and feels like. A new vibration, rattle, hesitation, or smell is often the first clue that something has changed.
