Buying a Used Motorcycle, Car or UTV? What to Look at Before You Buy

Used motorcycles, cars, trucks, ATVs, and UTVs can be great values, but it is easy to focus on appearance and miss evidence of wear, poor repairs, or deferred maintenance.

See it cold if possible

A cold start can reveal hard starting, smoke, battery weakness, unusual noises, and other problems that may be less obvious after the seller has already warmed the vehicle up.

Look beyond the paint

• Check for leaks, mismatched hardware, damaged wiring, loose panels, and obvious signs of recent repair.

• Look at tire age and wear, brake condition, steering feel, suspension movement, and wheel or bearing play.

• Ask what modifications have been made and whether the original parts or service records are available.

• Make sure switches, lights, gauges, accessories, charging systems, and other electrical equipment work as expected.

• Pay attention to warning lights, unusual smells, smoke, vibration, shifting problems, or driveline noise during a test drive or ride.

A second set of eyes can be worth it

A pre-purchase inspection cannot predict every future repair, but it can identify visible concerns, maintenance needs, and areas that deserve more testing before money changes hands.
